The Waterford Outdoor Recreation Plan 2026–2030 has been launched, setting out a framework for the development, management and promotion of outdoor recreation across Waterford city and county.

Waterford Sports Partnership reports that the plan was launched at the Anne Valley Walk in Dunhill on 12 June 2026. It covers activities such as walking, hiking, cycling, mountain biking, paddle sports, swimming, angling and nature-based recreation.

The plan is relevant to rural communities because it refers to important local landscapes and amenities including the Waterford Greenway, the Comeragh Mountains, the Copper Coast, the Blackwater Valley, beaches and forests. Consultation for the plan involved community groups, outdoor recreation clubs, statutory agencies, the public and landowners.

Why it matters locally

For the Kilmacthomas area, outdoor recreation is closely connected with farming and rural life. Trails, access routes, mountain areas and visitor activity can bring community and tourism benefits, but they also require careful management, respect for working farms and clear engagement with landowners.

The plan may become an important reference point for future discussions about walking routes, amenities, trail maintenance, countryside access and outdoor recreation projects in the Comeraghs and along the Greenway corridor.
