The Blue Flag was officially raised at Bunmahon Beach on Tuesday, June 23rd, marking a significant milestone for the Copper Coast village. This is the first time since 2013 that the beach has received the internationally recognised award for water quality and environmental management.
The Blue Flag awards were presented by An Taisce, with Waterford's coastline receiving three Blue Flags for the 2026 bathing season. While Clonea Beach and Tramore Beach both retained their status, Bunmahon's achievement is a particular cause for local celebration.

In addition to the Blue Flag, Bunmahon was also awarded a Green Coast Award, which recognises beaches that excel in environmental quality, natural beauty, and community stewardship. This gives Bunmahon dual award status for 2026.
Cathaoirleach of the Comeragh District, Cllr. Seánie Power, praised the local effort behind the achievement:
> "This is a significant milestone for Bunmahon and a testament to the dedication and commitment of all those who have worked so hard to make it possible... I would like to sincerely acknowledge and commend everyone who has contributed to this fantastic achievement for Bunmahon… Waterford City and County Council, An Taisce, local volunteers, community organisations, and all those who care so deeply about protecting and enhancing our coastal environment. This achievement belongs to you all."
